Places to visit

There are wild flowers in abundance in May and June; fields of sunflowers in July and walnuts and mushrooms to gather in the autumn months.

Close by is the town of Verteillac, which has a horse riding centre, bars and a shop that sells everything! Ribérac, also not far, has street cafés, supermarkets and a colourful market every Friday morning. Périgueux, the capital of the Dordogne is 35kms from Pauliac. Its renaissance quarter has been beautifully restored with narrow, cool streets opening on to sunny squares full of cafés and small shops.

Further afield the prehistoric sites of Les Eyzies and Lascaux; the châteaux of the Dordogne River; the remarkable town of Sarlat and the vineyards of Bergerac and Bordeaux are all within easy reach.

Aubeterre

Rated as one of the most beautiful villages of France, Aubeterre is less than 30 minute's drive from Pauliac. It is especially famous for its unique monolithic church. There's also a river-beach which is a popular place to swim.

Brantome

The Venice of the Perigord Vert. Historic town with plenty of cafés, restaurants and bars. Cruise around the Abbey and mediaeval houses or paddle your own canoe

Renamont

Quiet swimming on the River Dronne-.20 minutes from Pauliac. There's a friendly guingette (food and drink cabin). Rent a canoe and paddle upstream to mediaeval town of Bourdeilles.

Ribérac

Small town with essential commerces and one of the most extensive Friday morning markets in the area. Start here on a tour of Mediaeval churches (Circuit Roman des églises à coupole) that are so typical of many surrounding village churches.

Périgueux

Visit the perfectly designed Vesunna Museum designed by Jean Nouvel. A perfect building at one with its surroundings. Smile at the cathedral of Saint Front- a mini Sacre Coeur. Markets on Saturday and Wednesday are crammed with gastro goods.

Verteillac

Thriving village with bars and restaurants. Magnificent village pool. Monthly street brocante (antique fair- first Sunday of each month). In July- follow the Itinéraire Baroque. Baroque itinerant music festival. Visit small groups of musicians playing in the surrounding mediaeval village churches

Bordeaux and beyond

Bordeaux, a magnificent and cool city is under two hour's drive from Pauliac; as is Sarlat and the Dordogne river. Saint Emilion is even closer- just an hour's drive down the autoroute. To the North and West of Pauliac lie the vineyards of Cognac and Pineau de Charentes.
